Why I became AASECT Certified
By Shadena Natty – Serving Clients in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware
Sexual health and intimacy are essential components of overall well-being, yet they are often misunderstood, stigmatized, or left unaddressed. Many individuals and couples experience concerns such as differences in desire, sexual dysfunction, trauma-related challenges, relationship difficulties, or questions about identity and orientation. These deeply personal experiences can affect emotional, relational, and physical health.
My decision to pursue certification through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) was a meaningful step toward providing informed, ethical, and compassionate care to clients navigating these concerns.
AASECT certification provides advanced training in human sexuality, sexual development, sexual health, and evidence-based clinical practices. This specialized education allows me to approach sensitive topics with confidence and care, creating a safe, respectful, and nonjudgmental space for clients. The training also emphasizes cultural humility, trauma-informed care, and the connection between sexuality and overall mental health.
Sexual concerns rarely exist in isolation. Factors such as stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, hormonal changes, medical conditions, and life transitions can often influence sexual functioning and intimacy. Through specialized training I am better equipped to assess these interconnected factors and support clients in developing personalized strategies to improve connection, confidence and relationship satisfaction.
In my practice, I work with both individuals and couples. Couples may seek support for desire discrepancies, emotional or physical disconnection, or difficulty communicating about intimacy. Individuals may struggle with low desire, sexual dysfunction, Body-image concerns, or shame related to sexuality. Through counseling, I help clients explore these challenges, strengthen communication, and foster deeper emotional and relational connections.
AASECT certification allows me to support clients navigating topics that are often difficult to discuss, including sexual identity, sexuality after trauma, and the impact of shame on relationships. By creating space for open and honest conversations, clients can feel validated, empowered, and supported throughout their healing process.
At Shadena Natty Counseling, I provide sex therapy and sexual health counseling to clients across Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware. Becoming AASECT certified reflects my commitment to ongoing professional growth and to offering ethical, compassionate, and evidence-based care that honors the whole person. Sexual health is a important part of overall health, and everyone deserves knowledgeable and respectful support.
