When Is It Time to Seek Help for Drug or Alcohol Use?
Written By: Shadena Natty
Deciding to seek help for drug or alcohol use is one of the most courageous decisions a person can make. Whether you have been struggling for years or have recently noticed your substance use increasing, reaching out for support is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign that you are ready for something different.
Substance use often develops as a way to cope with overwhelming emotions, stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, or major life transitions. While drugs or alcohol may provide temporary relief, they can gradually create additional challenges, affecting relationships, work, finances, physical health, and emotional well being. What may begin as a way to cope can slowly become something that feels difficult to control.
Many people delay treatment because they fear being judged or believe they should be able to stop on their own. Others worry that asking for help means they have failed. The truth is that recovery does not require perfection. It requires support. You do not have to hit rock bottom before reaching out. If substance use is affecting your life in any way, it is worth having a conversation with a qualified professional.
One of the biggest misconceptions about addiction is that someone has to lose everything before seeking help. In reality, early intervention can make recovery more successful and prevent further consequences.
It may be time to speak with a professional if you find yourself drinking or using drugs more often than you intended, have tried to cut back or quit but struggle to do so, or use alcohol or drugs to cope with stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, or difficult emotions.
You may also benefit from support if you notice that your substance use is affecting your relationships, work, or daily responsibilities, experience legal consequences such as a DUI or other substance related charges, feel guilty, ashamed, or worried about your alcohol or drug use, or have family members or friends expressing concern about your substance use.
If any of these situations sound familiar, know that you are not alone and help is available.
Recovery looks different for everyone because every person’s story is unique. For some individuals, therapy alone may be appropriate. Others may benefit from outpatient treatment, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), medication assisted treatment (MAT), support groups, or inpatient rehabilitation. The right treatment plan depends on your individual needs, goals, support system, and level of substance use.
Whether you are looking for ongoing substance use counseling, need a professional drug and alcohol assessment, require a DUI evaluation, or simply want to better understand your relationship with alcohol or drugs, reaching out is an important first step toward lasting change.
At Shadena Natty Counseling, I provide compassionate, individualized care in a supportive, confidential, and judgment free environment. As a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC), I am qualified to provide drug and alcohol assessments, substance use counseling, DUI evaluations, individualized treatment planning, and referrals for higher levels of care when appropriate.
Whether you are seeking treatment voluntarily, have been referred by the court, or need an evaluation for legal, employment, or personal reasons, my goal is to help you feel informed, respected, and supported throughout the process.
Therapy provides a safe space to explore the underlying reasons behind substance use while developing healthier coping strategies that promote long term recovery. Together, we can address the emotional challenges contributing to substance use and work toward meaningful, lasting change.
Recovery is a journey, not a single event. There may be setbacks, moments of uncertainty, or periods where progress feels slower than you hoped. These experiences do not erase how far you have come. Healing is rarely a straight line, and every positive step forward matters.
Seeking help is not about being perfect. It is about choosing yourself, your health, and your future. No matter where you are in your journey, recovery is possible with the right support.
You do not have to have all the answers before reaching out. Sometimes the first conversation is simply about exploring your options and learning what support may be right for you.
If you or someone you care about is struggling with drug or alcohol use, you do not have to face it alone.
Shadena Natty Counseling offers a free 15 minute phone consultation to discuss your concerns, answer your questions, and help determine the next best step. Whether you are seeking ongoing substance use counseling, a drug and alcohol assessment, or a DUI evaluation, I would be honored to support you on your path toward healing and recovery.
