Preparing for Seasonal Depression Before It Arrives
Written By: Shadena Natty
Have you ever noticed that your mood changes when the seasons do?
As summer comes to an end and the days become shorter many people begin adjusting to new routines cooler temperatures and the upcoming holidays. For some however the change in seasons can also bring changes in mental health.
You may notice less energy more sleep decreased motivation irritability or a desire to withdraw from others. If you notice these changes around the same time each year you are not alone and you do not have to wait until you are struggling to begin taking care of yourself.
Start by paying attention to your patterns. Think about what happened last year. When did you first notice your mood changing? What did you stop doing? Did you isolate more or lose interest in things you normally enjoy?
Once you recognize your patterns you can create a simple winter wellness plan. Protect your sleep routine. Get outside during daylight hours. Keep moving. Make plans with people you care about and schedule activities you can look forward to.
Movement and time outdoors can also be incorporated into therapy through walk and talk therapy. Instead of sitting in a traditional office setting clients have the opportunity to walk with their therapist while engaging in therapeutic conversation. For some people movement and being outdoors can make therapy feel more natural and create a different environment for reflection and connection.
Walk and talk therapy is not appropriate for every person or every situation but it can be a meaningful alternative for those who benefit from incorporating movement and the outdoors into their therapeutic experience.
Most importantly give yourself grace. The goal is not to force yourself to feel positive throughout the colder months. The goal is to recognize what you need and respond before things become overwhelming.
At Shadena Natty Counseling we believe you do not have to wait until you are in crisis to seek support. We offer a free 15 minute phone consultation for individuals who are considering therapy and want to determine whether working together may be a good fit.
You do not have to wait for winter to feel different before you start caring for yourself differently. Sometimes preparing for a difficult season is one of the most important ways you can take care of your mental health.
